I plugged in a friends iMac via firewire taget mode to clone his drive to an image and something strange went down. Now I can't log into my user account properly and Macintosh HD has a red no go sign on it when I command-click the finder title. Get Info shows 'Fetching' instead of 'Me' and finder won't show any files when browsing Macintosh HD. Closer inspection shows Macintosh HD to be owner by uid 502 but all other drives are uid 501.

For some reason, set Volume x uses a volume scale of 0 to 7, while output volume of (get volume settings) uses a scale of 0 to 100. You could multiply by 0.07, but there's an easier solution, pointed out by Antal Spector-Zabusky: use set volume output volume n, which uses the 0-100 scale. In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, choose File > New Image > Blank Image. Enter a filename for the disk image, add tags if necessary, then choose where to save it. This is the name that appears in the Finder, where you save the disk image file before opening it. Mute the speakers immediately by checking the 'Mute' box. Select the 'Sound Effects' tab to change the alert volume by moving the 'Alert Volume' slider. Check the 'Show volume in menu bar' box to display the volume icon in your Mac's menu bar; use it to quickly change the sound volume.

I figure I need to get that back to 501 somehow. Running the installer from USB and running terminal there iv'e tried. Cd /Volmes/Macintosh HD chown 501:501 Me and chown 501:20 Me but it remains 502. How can I fix it? P.S OSX is installed on 'Macintosh SSD' and my home folder is on a separate drive'Macintosh HD'.

Until today I never knew that you can actually adjust your Mac’s volume in 1/4 increments by pressing Shift + Option (Alt) + the volume key on your keyboard. Mount it, and then change the name of the volume directly, the same way you'd edit the name of a disk. You can't do this with a read-only image, of course. I'm not sure there's any solution in that case.
